The Magic Moment in a Mind-Blowing, Belief-Filled Goals Session

The Magic Moment in a Mind-Blowing, Belief-Filled Goals Session

Jul 25, 2023

Have you ever been part of a mind-blowing, belief filled goals session? If you’re not sure, then I would say the answer is no.

This just happened. I was working with a leadership team and towards the end of a full-day, we were setting the long-term goal for the company. Although there was a lot of conversation and spirited debate, there was this moment where the whole leadership team was wide-eyed and smiling at each other.

They were wide-eyed because they had just set a mind-blowing goal, but they were all smiling at each other because they knew they had all bought-in to the mind-blowing goal. In other words, they all believed that this huge goal they had set will one day be true. That is the magic moment.

Of course, this does not come about from a mere caffeinated, late-night brainstorming session. Rather it is a moment preceded by other clarifying work during which a leadership team gets on the same page about why they (and the company) exist in the first place, what great work looks like, who they want to do it for, and who they want to do it with.

When a leadership team realizes they have established a unique company mindset, they can’t help but to set a mind-blowing, belief-filled long-term goal. It naturally flows out of the clarifying work they have already done, and anything less than mind-blowing wouldn’t feel right.

Of course, the thought of chunking the goal up into small, manageable bites and aligning the leadership and talent to execute might leave you skeptical about the follow-through, but let me end with this thought. The belief-filled part of this magic moment carries over in that the obstacles and challenges that other leadership teams may perceive to be defeating, this leadership team sees as merely details.
